Operational Changes for Day Use Activities at Somerville Lake’s Yegua Creek and Rocky Creek Parks

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District
Published Feb. 18, 2021

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials announce park operational changes beginning March 1 at both Rocky Creek Park and Yegua Creek Park at Somerville Lake.

These parks were originally designed as campgrounds only; however, day users were allowed access to the campgrounds for certain activities.  These activities included: boat launching, shoreline fishing, sightseeing, walking and biking, as well as access to nature trails and playgrounds.  The number of day users utilizing the campgrounds generally increased each year and day user visitation has grown so large that it now negatively impacts the use of the campground by campers.

Effective March 1 parks will begin the transition to serving campers only, as the campgrounds were originally designed.  Access to the campgrounds for shoreline fishing, sightseeing, walking and biking, and access to nature trails and playgrounds, will no longer be permitted.

Beginning October 1 boat launching by day users will no longer be permitted.  Only campers with advanced reservations made at www.recreation.gov or by telephone at 1-877-444-6777, will be allowed access to the campgrounds. Visitors, regardless of their type of visit, are reminded to wear their lifejackets while in, on or around the water. Something as simple as wearing a lifejacket could drastically improve your chances of surviving a water related incident.

Day users are invited to utilize day use facilities available at Lake Somerville Marina at Overlook Park, Welch Park, Big Creek Park or Birch Creek State Park/Nails Creek State Park.  Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to verify facilities available for day use and receive information regarding individual day use policies and fees.  Access points, including Ironbridge Road and Pecan Lake (foot access only), located within a few miles from Rocky Creek Park and Yegua Creek Park are also available.

Questions regarding park operational changes and information for access points is available by calling the Somerville Lake Office at 979-596-1622.
