Fort Polk Rail System reopens
The Fort Polk Rail System in Fort Polk, Louisiana officially reopened May 1, 2018. The major railroad repair project included rebuilding the subbase, repairs to the surface and alignment, replacing crossties and switch ties, and repairs to the gauge, profile, and rail joints. The project required close coordination between Fort Polk, the USACE Engineer Research and Development Center's Chief Technical Advisor for Army Rail and the Kansas City Southern mainline. Despite the many challenges over the five-month construction duration, such as weather delays, the team delivered a quality product on time and within budget.
