U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Celebrates Black History Month

Published Feb. 26, 2013

FORT WORTH, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, will celebrate Black History Month with a 1:30 p.m. program at The Fritz G. Lanham Federal Building, 819 Taylor Street, 4th Floor, Texas Room, 4A14H, Fort Worth, Texas 76102. This year’s theme for the National celebration of Black History Month is ‘At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality – the Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.’

The program will celebrate the rich history, numerous achievements and contributions of African-Americans and will feature a keynote presentation by the North Texas Buffalo Soldier Unit, based in Cedar Hill, Texas. The Unit’s outreach spans beyond Texas with a mission to educate students and the general public on the historic events that took place in Texas and Oklahoma during the first generations of America’s first Buffalo Soldier units. The units received their designation based on being the first U.S. military units to be comprised entirely of African-Americans.

"As we welcome this historic unit and celebrate them and the countless African-Americans whose contributions have and continue to shape our nation, we can take pride that DoD continues to lead the way in diversity and equal opportunity," said Col. Charles Klinge, Commander, Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
