The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fort Worth District at Canyon Lake is tracking the current flooding conditions along the Guadalupe River.
Heavy rainfall fell in the Upper Guadalupe River Basin above Canyon Lake and created runoff that flowed into Guadalupe River. Those waters are currently flowing into the lake.
While Canyon Lake is used by the public for recreation purposes, the primary mission for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the lake is for flood risk management. The Corps of Engineers is currently holding water at Canyon Lake to lessen the risk of flood conditions in communities downstream of Canyon Dam.
“Canyon Lake is at 85 percent of its conservation pool capacity. We expect to reach the top of conservation pool by Saturday,” said Canyon Lake Manager, Brett Mazey. “It has been more than 4 and a half years since the lake has been at conservation pool. Reaching this level is a great thing.”
USACE is monitoring the situation closely and providing forecast updates to stakeholders and partners.
At this point, with the rain that has fallen, it looks like the reservoir will reach 909’ msl by Saturday, July 18.
Canyon Lake dam is performing as designed while receiving and holding the recent flood waters. There is ample storage capacity before reaching the top of flood pool at 943’ msl.
