Starship Renovations seek to rehabilitate and renovate outdated Trainee Barracks
and bring the facilities up to current standards and code. Many of the older training
barracks are at the end of their 30 to 50-year design life cycle and do not meet
the current Army design standards or current building codes. The Starship facilities
houses 1200 soldiers and have an identical mission similar in function to Basic
Combat Training Complexes. A Starship will include:
- Barracks space
- Classrooms
- Latrines
- • A new detached dining building (DFAC)
The facilities allow the training soldiers to live, eat, train and work together
within the complex.
Starship Renovations are planned on basis of the need to replace ageing and functionally-deficient
or obsolete facilities. When demolition and reconstruction of a new facility is
not cost-effective, Starship Renovation becomes a feasible alternative. A number
of factors are considered in selecting a facility for renovation, which includes
the current demands of the installation, feasibility of modifying the building for
a different use, and the potential for renovation to a more energy-efficient facility.
All Starship Renovations aim to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver certification.
Value-engineering study is used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and ROI on the
proposed renovation.
