– Ginger Gruber, Deputy Chief of Contracting with the Fort Worth District’s U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was awarded the Secretary of Army Award for Excellence in Contracting January 28 in a ceremony held as a part of the Principal Assistant Responsible for Contracting Winter Leadership Conference.

The award is one of the highest given to an Army Civilian and recognizes a deployed Army Civilian whose actions demonstrate or embody those unique, outstanding qualities possessed by the late Barbara C. Heald, a contracting official who in 2005 was killed during her third tour of duty in the Gulf region.

With twelve years as a DA Civilian, Gruber already embodies the qualities that are synonymous with the service of the late Heald – extraordinary commitment and sacrifices in the service of her country; demonstrated professionalism in contracting; and dedication to selfless service aimed at supporting the mission of the United States Army.

During Gruber’s 8-month deployment as the Chief of Contracting in the Afghanistan Theater of Operations, she met each challenge with sound solutions and performed as a Senior Contracting Officer at a level of expertise that went beyond the call of duty.

"Like Soldiers who deploy out of their sense of loyalty and duty to country, Ginger volunteered with those same ideals," said Col. Charles Klinge, Commander of the Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
